Storage Guard

Many battery storage systems provide data - Few provide real insights

Battery storage systems, including large-scale BESS, generate more operational data today than ever before. At the same time, drawing the right conclusions from this data is becoming increasingly challenging. Critical developments at cell level, gradual performance losses or changes in battery condition often remain undetected for long periods. BMS data may reveal anomalies, but it does not always answer the key questions about their causes, risks and long-term impact. This creates uncertainty for operators, investors and asset managers when assessing, operating and strategically planning BESS assets.

Storage Guard answers the most critical questions about your battery storage system

Storage Guard collects, structures and analyses battery data at cell, module and system level. Combined with NOVUM’s analysis methods and battery expertise, this provides reliable insights into the risks, performance and ageing behaviour of BESS assets.

Enhanced safety

Critical issues become apparent before they result in failure, security problems, or downtime.

Enhanced performance

Performance deviations and inefficiencies can be identified, understood, and targeted directly.

Enhanced planning security

The state of health (SoH) and storage development are evaluated transparently and comprehensively.

One platform for the entire lifecycle of battery storage systems

Storage Guard combines various analytics modules into one central platform, supporting operators and investors with key questions regarding the safety, performance, and lifespan of BESS assets.

Performance Guard

Continuously keeping performance and warranty conditions in view

Performance Guard monitors KPIs relevant to the warranty, such as efficiency, power output, cycle count, energy throughput, and capacity. The system independently verifies that the storage system delivers the promised performance and provides timely alerts before warranty conditions are violated.

Safety Guard

Predictive monitoring provides lead time for targeted protective measures

Safety Guard continuously monitors data at the cell, module, and rack levels. It detects unusual patterns early and indicates where safety-critical conditions may arise. It evaluates not just individual measurements, but also their trajectory and interplay. This allows potential root causes to be examined more closely before anomalies escalate.

Lifetime Guard

Operating profiles and stress factors shape the remaining useful life

Lifetime Guard tracks how the state of health of a battery storage system evolves during real-world operation. It reveals which stress factors accelerate degradation, helping operators make informed decisions regarding operations, warranties, and commercial strategies.

FAQ

Find answers to the most common questions regarding battery storage systems, operational data, storage requirements, and services.

Storage Guard is a supplier-neutral platform for BESS monitoring and data-driven battery analytics. It analyzes operational data from battery storage systems at the cell, module, rack, and system level. This reveals technical deviations, safety risks, and performance changes, enabling NOVUM's battery experts to interpret them.

Storage Guard is designed for operators, investors, asset owners, IPPs, and technical managers of utility-scale battery storage systems. It is particularly relevant when safety, performance, availability, warranty conditions, and the long-term development of a BESS need to be monitored independently. Storage Guard also provides a solid data foundation for technical evaluations of individual assets or entire storage portfolios.

Storage Guard processes operational data from BMS, SCADA, and other available systems. Automated and AI-powered models analyze parameters such as cell voltages, temperatures, currents, states of charge, and temporal developments. Anomalies are not merely flagged, but evaluated within their technical context and contextualized by NOVUM's battery experts whenever necessary. This transforms individual data points into a solid basis for decision-making.

A Battery Management System (BMS) provides basic control and protection functions, but does not always deliver a sufficiently accurate evaluation of actual battery health. Many status metrics rely on simplified models and limited computing capacity. Particularly with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, purely voltage-based determination of the State of Charge (SoC) can lead to accumulating SoC drift due to the flat voltage curve. Storage Guard validates this data, detects correlations, and enables a deeper technical evaluation.

Storage Guard requires high-resolution operational data from the battery storage system. Depending on the system setup, this includes cell voltages, temperatures, current, State of Charge (SoC), State of Health (SoH), operating states, and fault logs. Data is connected via defined interfaces or NOVUM's Battery Data Interface. Available and required data parameters are audited prior to integration.

Storage Guard integrates into the existing battery storage software architecture via available data sources and interfaces. The platform accesses data from BMS, SCADA, or other storage systems without affecting or replacing their core control functions. NOVUM first audits the system architecture, data availability, and required data quality before implementing a custom integration for the respective BESS.

Storage Guard detects deviations and unusual developments across cell, module, rack, and system levels. These include temperature anomalies, voltage imbalances, SoC drift, uneven cell balancing, performance losses, or changes in degradation rates. Crucially, the system does not just alert to an anomaly, but delivers a technical evaluation of its root cause, urgency, and potential operational impact.

Conventional BESS monitoring typically displays raw measurements, system states, and standard system alerts. Storage Guard goes further by independently validating data, analyzing temporal correlations, and investigating technical root causes behind anomalies. AI serves as a tool for processing large datasets, while the technical evaluation and derivation of corrective actions are backed by NOVUM's engineering expertise.

Storage Guard enhances BESS profitability by making technical deviations and performance losses visible early on. This enables operators to react proactively, reduce unnecessary downtime, and align operation more effectively with technical and contractual boundaries. Reliable operational data also supports warranty enforcement, asset valuations, and informed decisions regarding maintenance or optimization.
